Tuatara

A living ark

Whitehead

Whitehead.  Photo by Peter Reese.

Common name: whitehead
Maori name: popokatea
Scientific name: Mohoua albicilla
Status: endemic, protected

Very small, half the size of a sparrow.

Are noisy - have a loud 'chirruping' chatter and like chattering to each other. Busy and gregarious.

Were extinct in Wellington until they were released into Karori Sanctuary in 2001.

Can be seen throughout the Sanctuary, in small groups high in trees, especially where pine trees are surrounded by native forest.
