Common name: brown teal
Maori name: pateke
Scientific name: Anas chlorotis
Status: endemic, nationally endangered


One of the world's rarest ducks with approximately 1200 remaining in the wild; was formerly widespread in New Zealand

First released at Karori Sanctuary in 2000 and are breeding successfully

Commonly seen on the lower and upper lakes and sometimes at the kaka feeders on Sanctuary by Night tours!
